Uisce Éireann Implements Innovative Integrated Constructed Wetland (ICW) for Wastewater Treatment

Uisce Éireann, the Irish national water utility, has successfully completed the works on the Coolatee Sewerage Scheme in County Donegal, marking a significant achievement for the region. This project brings important environmental and community benefits, including the elimination of untreated wastewater discharge into the Foyle and Deele Rivers. The result is improved water quality, which also supports local biodiversity and fosters social and economic development.

A key feature of the project is the construction of an Integrated Constructed Wetland (ICW) wastewater treatment plant. An ICW is a sustainable, natural wastewater treatment system that is designed to look and function in a similar way to a natural wetland. It’s an environmentally friendly way to treat wastewater resulting in reduced operational and maintenance costs. The ICW method is also known for reduced energy consumption, and ability to lower carbon emissions, making it a highly sustainable solution for wastewater management.

The Coolatee project is one of the first ICW systems developed by Uisce Éireann and serves as a model for future projects across Ireland, aiming to enhance wastewater treatment infrastructure in an eco-friendly way.
