Water Erasmus exchange on clean bathing waters

Aqua Publica Europea and BCASA, the public water cycle operator from Barcelona, co-organised the Water Erasmus Technical Workshop DIVING IN: The role of public water operators in ensuring clean bathing waters on 12 May 2022.

On 12 May 2022, Aqua Publica Europea and BCASA, the public water cycle operator from Barcelona, co-organised the Water Erasmus Technical Workshop DIVING IN: The role of public water operators in ensuring clean bathing waters in order to discuss technical and governance approaches to contribute to the quality of bathing waters, which is critical for health, the environment but also local development. 

Following an opening by the European Commission, with an overview of the ongoing review process of the Bathing Water Directive and perspectives for safe bathing waters, experts from Aqua Publica Europea shared their technical and governance approaches to contribute to clean seas and rivers, in particular considering the impact of combined sewer overflows. 

  • BCASA (Barcelona) presented the LIFE iBATHWATER project 
  • SIAAP and the City of Paris (France) presented the governance and technical framework that enables the project to make it possible to swim in the Seine river in view of the Olympics 2024 
  • Aguas de Gaia (Portugal) presented the path that led to making the coastline compliant with EU requirements and actions are taken for the cleanliness and attractivity of beaches 
  • The City of Vienna  (Austria) presented the LIFE Urban Lake - Old Danube project
